Q: Bioenergetics (B-01)

A 23-year-old man developed blurring of central vision in his left eye over the last several weeks.  Two months later, his right eye shows the same problem.  His mother has told him that two other persons in her family have been affected by this disease. You give different tests and confirm your initial diagnosis: the patient has a Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy. It is a genetic disease characterized by a mutation in mitochondrial DNA that produces a low activity of Complex I. It lowers the amount of energy available to the cells of the optic nerve and retina. These cells are damaged and even die because of the lack of energy.

Which of the enzymes of the Krebs Cycle yield reduced cofactors that, at least in theory, could be used plenty by the respiratory chain of the affected cells in these patients?

a)     Citrate synthase

b)     Aconitase

c)      Isocitrate dehydrogenase

d)     Succinyl thiokinase

e)     Succinate dehydrogenase

f)       Fumarase

g)     Malate dehydrogenase
